Merchant Kitty offers webdesign and management.
Why does every business need a website?
Having a web presence is essential in today’s business world. Not having a website is like not having a phone or electricity. The web is where most people turn first to find out about a business. Some people will automatically look somewhere else as soon as they find that a company does not have a website. It suggests that the business is archaic, antisocial, technologically challenged, and unable to compete.
Many businesses are turning to Facebook or other social media as a substitute for a web page, but these substitutes do not allow you the customization a website has. They don’t allow you to have your own domain name which shows you be knowledgeable and progressive, nor can they provide personal emails from that domain name which shows you are professional. In fact, an email from a free email provider like Gmail or Yahoo is a dead giveaway that you do not have a website. When you provide an email with a domain name your customers automatically assume there is a website to go with it, and some of them will go to check it out.
But the reasons for having a website are not only negative. There are so many advantages. No other form of advertising gives you such unlimited versatility to say who you are, what you do, and why your customers should choose you and your product. A website gives you unlimited space to get your message out. It is very inexpensive– probably the most inexpensive form of advertisement. Another great thing about websites is that search engines allow your site to be seen by your targeted audience. Your potential customer Google’s your product and your area and gets YOU! It’s a beautiful thing for both of you. Google is like a dating service! Still another benefit is your ability to weed out people who cannot benefit from your service. You can state exactly what you do and don’t do. No need for you and your customers to waste time placing phone calls only to find out you cannot help them. The list of advantages goes on and on.
I am not a big fan of the run around. I think a person should be upfront about what they do and how much it costs. You can get a domain and web hosting for around $3 per month. Renewing a domain costs a little more, maybe $9 per month. You can find out how to build your web and most hosting comes with free tools to help you. It is possible to ask questions from a live person to get some clarity. It can be done, and people do it all the time. If you are tech savvy at all and enjoy diy, you should give it a try. This is where I offer help. Here is a list of services and prices:
Domain name registration
Purchasing web hosting
setting up email
Publishing (putting it on the web)
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Social media registration (putting your business on free major social media sites to help bring traffic to your site like Yellow pages, Facebook, or Merchant Circle)
This fee is for 1 year web hosting. The price for hosting and domain registration comes out of the $640. At the end of the year, you may continue to pay your hosting service and registrar yourself without my help if you like.
$30 / month (3 month minimum)
Web management. This allows you to call me to make occasional changes, add a page, add emails, or handle renewals. Hosting and domain registration renewals are not included, but I can facilitate their upkeep. Should you opt out of the web monitoring, but later change your mind, you may pay the $30 for 3 months up front ($90). There will not be a need to pay the $640 again unless your website needs to be designed again from scratch.
What this means for you…
$1000 will get you a website and management for a year. (or $640 without management)
After that, you will pay your hosting and domain registration plus $360 / year for web management. I cannot give you an exact price on hosting and domain registration as that varies from company to company. I also love to barter, so you never know if you don’t ask!
Basically its like doing your own home improvement. If you don’t mind getting dirty, and spending some time, you can do it yourself cheaper. It’s possible to learn it on your own. That too takes time, but will save you some dough. The more expertise the contractor has, the more he charges. I will not be able to build you online databases, but I can give your page some PayPal buttons so you can provide online purchases. Should I become proficient enough for fancy HTML or online databases, I will have to charge more!
