Dont forget, if you are looking to do a specific painting or have a group that would like to gather to paint, I also do private parties.  You can find information about private parties here!

Facebook Group, Why I am creating one for you!

image

Well, this facebook thing has been the hardest part of online advertising I’ve had to learn.  You may not know that I do some web design on the side and so I am very interested in online advertising and search engine optimization. It is free after all and the most economical way of getting the word out about your business.  Most of all I am interested in growing my own business and being a good host to my customers.  Who doesn’t want to be liked.

So I struggle with how can I make sure customers can get the information they need but not be obnoxious and intrusive.  We all know there is a fine line. So there are yard sale groups and other fb communities to advertise on, fb pages, email subscriptions…all of which I use.  So when fb asked if I wanted to make a group I was left wondering if it would be helpful to better communicate with my people, or just be a quicker way to wear them out with advertising.

Because I do web design, I like to pass along advertising helps that I learn along the way. So this is what I have gathered about facebook groups vs. Pages.

Pages and groups are similar in that
• you invite people to join
• the group stuff shows up in the news feed
• invites can be sent out by anyone endorsing your group/page

But they differ in this way
• groups get better visibility (not all your followers will see your posts.  Ever. Facebook controls that. If you follow it doesn’t mean you will get every post or even “important” news.  Facebook does not understand “important”.

I feel I must elaborate, because people don’t seem to understand.   I liked/followed certain pages because I knew a big sale was coming and I didn’t want to miss it.  It came and went without a word. I went to the page and there was the post that never made it to my news feed.  I was annoyed. So I searched through fb help and found out that liking/following did not mean I was getting to see all the posts. The number of posts to feed was reduced early last year by fb to trim down the news feeds and I saw a significant reduction of people reached by my posts.

I know this does not excite most people, but again, I share this in interest of business web design, and many of my friends and followers are business owners. I hate wasting time writing posts that know one will see.

Even this minute I am debating whether to share this by fb status or as a blog post through my website and share to fb.

So, as I was saying, groups get MORE recognition then page posts.  Not all, but more.
• groups allow you to add friends instead of waiting for them to accept an invite. This means it is business controlled instead of customer controlled. I put you into my group instead of waiting for you to join. Pages depend completely on customer initiative. The customer must unjoin to get out. This is good but can be annoying too.

However, this ONLY applies to friends. I cannot join customers who are not friends. Then it is back to customer initiative. I must invite and hope they join, same as a page.

• the “force you to join” bonus transfers to friends of friends.  A group member can join up their friends.  This is better than pages because you cannot make anyone like your page. So this is really where groups seem to come through.

• There is a thing called a sticky, or sticky post.  It’s where you want a post to always be at the top so it’s the first post seen.  Pages don’t have a sticky option. Why do you need a sticky?  You have info you want to get out to every member. Personally, I want everyone to know about giveaways, contact info, promotional events and basic information about what I do. That’s what I’m putting in MY sticky.  Fb pages don’t have stickies.  I’ve checked. They SHOULD!

So I am left wondering why have a page at all, why not just a group.  Well, I’m still not sure, except I already have a page and I have been advised that I need both.  So for now, both it is.  Be assured, once I find out I will pass that along to you.

One more thing I want to address before I’m through: personal facebook vs. Fb pages…

I had a friend comment that she didn’t know what Merchant Kitty is. How can she be my fb friend and NOT know my business name, I wondered.  95% of my fb activity is about Merchant Kitty.  So I took a look at my profile page.  Nothing.  Nothing about Merchant Kitty.  The only thing about my business was the occasional tag a customer would make about a party, of course no mention of my business name.  So much for branding.

So I checked out my Merchant Kitty posts, which I thought would be posting through my name.   On my computer I can choose to post as Charlotte.  But on my phone there is no way to post as me, I only post as Merchant  Kitty.  (And I always post from my phone) So my friend, who follows me but not Merchant Kitty, has NEVER seen a post with my business name. UGH!

So it is a good thing I have been sending invites to my “friends” since most of the people I have befriended have been customers for the purpose of staying in touch about Merchant Kitty events. I roll my eyes because it was an accident that I was doing the right thing.  No wonder I would have people come up to me and have no idea I was having these parties. Facebook is so completely unreliable and absolutely necessary at the same time!!!

So in conclusion,  I am starting a Facebook group in order to better connect with my customers. I am not trying to be annoying and you can unjoin if you wish. But I never want to hold my business back because information was not made available to current or new customers. And I don’t want to frustrate customers who are looking for information. And I hope if you are a business person, you are able to glean some advertising help from my troubles!  Here’s to the benefits and pitfalls of social media!!!

This week’s open paint parties

Well, we nearly had our socks blown off by winter storm Goliath.   You know it’s bad when they name it!  Although not everyone is quite dug out yet, one thing is very clear, we’re all suffering from cabin fever.  So if your able to get out and need to work out some of the crazies from being cooped up too long, come and join us at a painting party this week!

Thursday night is New Year’s Eve and we have a holiday themed painting perfect for the occasion.

image

You can of course change the color and if you would rather commemorate a different special time, you can paint your face to something else. There is always a third option of leaving off the hands and installing a clock kit from Hobby Lobby,  but you’re on your own for that one!

Now usually I announce these activities pretty last minute,  but my new years resolution is to be more organized, so soon I will be coming out with a calendar for the month.

I will be offering several couples painting parties as well with valentine’s day approaching, but don’t worry if you must paint alone, I will make sure every couples painting can be done as a single as well.

One more bit of news, each week I will be also offering open paint parties in Portales as well at the Hydration Station, so that will be fun!

So come see 2015 out and 2016 in with me this week, and shake off the winter blues (if you can get out of your ice cave!)
